Cycling enthusiasts in Singapore may find the pace of leisure biking along neatly paved roads too pedestrian, (and full of them aswel). If you wish to get off the beaten trackand get onto an off-road one, there are lots of choices available. There are four officially sanctioned off-road cycling trails here andthey are located at an even spread around the island at Tampines, Kent Ridge, Upper Bukit Timah and Pulau Ubin. Each trail offers the rider unique challenges with varying degrees of difficulty. For example, the course at Pulau Ubin contains five ratings of difficulty, ranging from Blue Square (a combination of steep slopes and a narrow track with poor traction) to Double Black Diamond (Very steep climbs and drop-offs, sharp cornersand tricky obstacles). Usage of the tracks is free, but you normally have to bring your own bike; Pulau Ubin offers bike rentals that go for $4 to $6 per day. Due to the nature of this sport where taking a tumble is commonplaceand getting cuts and abrasions are second nature, wearing protective gear is strongly encouraged. Shin guards, gloves, elbow pads, helmets and proper footwear go a long way in minimising injuries, but the best methodof damage control still lies with the rider engaging the bike trails with precaution and knowing his limitations. The online cycling portal at www.togoparts.com is where most like-minded bikers meet to exchange information, seek help or arrange to meet for trail sessions.
