Taoists make a pilgrimage to the Tua Pek Kong Temple every year to pray for prosperity and fertility. The legend behind Kusu Island (which means "Turtle Island" in Mandarin) tells of two shipwrecked sailors, a Chinese and a Malay, who were saved by a turtle. In gratitude, the sailors built a Chinese temple and a Malay shrine, along with huge turtle sculptures, on the island.
